City-Cardiff Preferential Looking Acuity Test Set with occluding frames
- City-Cardiff Acuity Test was developed by a team of clinical vision scientists at City University-London and Cardiff University in Wales. The test provides a rapid means of assessing infant visual acuity from a few months to 3 years. The cards make use of the well established assessment technique known as preferential looking whereby an infant’s innate visual tendency is to fixate on a pattern. This tendency is then exploited to obtain a quantitative estimate of acuity. The use of ‘round’ gratings prevents ‘clues’ at the edges of traditional square grating patterns.
- This simple to use test involves presenting an infant with a series of grating patterns which differ in spatial frequency (fine vs course, or narrow vs wide lines) and then observing the infant’s eye preference or behavior. This can be accomplished at 1/5 meter through the “peep hole” provided, which avoids distraction of the administrator’s face. As an alternative, experienced test administrators can view the child’s eye preference from the side of the card if the administrator’s face is not the attraction. The examiner then determines whether a looking preference exists for a given grating and if it does not, the infant can be presented with further gratings of increased spatial frequency until the infant’s acuity limit is achieved. In other words, the infant no longer exhibits a preference for the grating at the top or bottom.
- City-Cardiff test includes the 18 laminated cards, case, gloves, and instructions. The 587200 Happy Froggy Flip-up Occluders are recommended as they provide an quick method for monocular testing.
