Description

The Avanos ELL18150SGC is an ECHOLONG Continuous Nerve Block Set*. This is the longest standard version of the ECHOLONG* series, specifically designed for placing a catheter near very deep nerve structures for extended pain management.

The "SGC" designation indicates that this is a stimulating needle with a facet bevel and an integrated cable, offering "dual guidance" (ultrasound + stimulation) for high-precision placement in complex anatomy.

Technical Specifications

  • Needle Gauge: 18G (designed to act as a conduit for a 21G catheter).

  • Needle Length: 150 mm (approximately 6 inches).

  • Needle Tip: 21° Facet Bevel (short-bevel design).

  • Configuration: Stimulating (includes an integrated electrical cable).

  • Catheter Type: 21G Soft-Tip Catheter.

Key Features

  • Maximum Ultrasound Visibility: At a 150 mm length, maintaining a clear image is difficult. The EchoBright laser-etched pattern on the shaft reflects ultrasound waves back to the probe, ensuring the needle is visible even at the steep angles required for deep blocks.

  • Dual Guidance Technology: The integrated stimulating cable allows the clinician to use ultrasound for visual tracking while simultaneously using electrical pulses to confirm nerve proximity via a muscle twitch response.

  • Facet Bevel Safety: The 21° facet bevel provides superior tactile feedback compared to long-bevel needles. This allows the physician to "feel" the needle passing through various fascial planes, which is a critical safety check when working at significant depths.

  • Structural Stability: The 18-gauge thickness provides the necessary column strength to prevent the needle from bending or "wandering" as it passes through thick layers of muscle and tissue.

  • Soft-Tip Catheter: The set includes a flexible, atraumatic catheter. The soft tip is designed to minimize the risk of nerve or vessel injury as the catheter is advanced into the tissue space.

Primary Uses

The 150 mm length is typically reserved for extra-deep Continuous Peripheral Nerve Blocks (CPNB), especially in patients with a larger body habitus, for procedures such as:

  • Deep Sciatic Nerve Blocks: (Gluteal approach) for continuous pain relief after major leg or foot surgery.

  • Psoas Compartment Blocks: To reach the lumbar plexus deep within the posterior abdominal wall.

  • Lumbar Plexus Blocks: For prolonged analgesia following complex hip or femur procedures.

  • Deep Fascial Plane Blocks: Where the target area is located deep beneath multiple muscle layers and requires a catheter for extended medication delivery.
