Description
The Avanos ELL18050TGC is an ECHOLONG Continuous Nerve Block Set*. This kit is designed for the placement of a catheter to provide ongoing delivery of local anesthetic, offering extended pain management for several days following surgery.
The "TGC" designation indicates that this set features a Tuohy-tip needle and is stimulating, making it a "dual-guidance" system compatible with both ultrasound and electrical nerve stimulation.
Technical Specifications
Needle Gauge: 18G (allows for a 21G catheter to be threaded through the center).
Needle Length: 50 mm (approximately 2 inches).
Needle Tip: Tuohy Bevel (a curved, "scooped" tip).
Configuration: Stimulating (includes an integrated electrical cable).
Catheter Type: 21G Soft-Tip Catheter.
Key Features
Tuohy Needle Tip: The curved tip is specifically designed to help "steer" the catheter as it exits the needle. This allows the catheter to be directed at a more parallel angle to the nerve, which helps prevent kinking and reduces the risk of the catheter migrating away from the target area.
360° Echogenicity: The needle shaft features a specialized laser-etched pattern that reflects ultrasound waves back to the probe. This ensures high visibility on the monitor even when the needle is inserted at steep angles.
Dual Guidance Capability: With the integrated stimulating cable, the clinician can use ultrasound to see the nerve while simultaneously using electrical pulses to confirm the needle's proximity via a muscle twitch response.
Soft-Tip Catheter: The set includes a flexible catheter with a rounded, atraumatic tip. This design is intended to minimize the risk of nerve or blood vessel injury while the catheter is being advanced into the tissue space.
Numerical Depth Markings: Both the needle and the catheter feature graduated markings, allowing the physician to precisely control the depth of needle insertion and the length of catheter advanced into the patient.
Primary Uses
The 50 mm length is ideal for Continuous Peripheral Nerve Blocks (CPNB) where the target nerve is at a superficial or moderate depth, such as:
Interscalene Blocks: For continuous pain relief after major shoulder surgery.
Adductor Canal Blocks: Frequently used for post-operative recovery after total knee replacements.
Femoral Nerve Blocks: For prolonged pain management following knee or hip procedures.
Supraclavicular Blocks: For extended anesthesia of the arm and hand.
