300" (762 cm) Appx 8.5 mL, Smallbore Ext Set, Clamp, Rotating Luer
Extension sets are linked to IV catheters to allow a longer distance between the patient and the fluid being administered which is sometimes necessary due to the size and volume of equipment being used at any one time. Sets should be primed prior to connection with catheter, if it is being used for infusions, a syringe should be attached, and the set primed before being connected to the patient. Once an IV catheter has been introduced, the male luer lock of the extension tubing can be inserted into the port at the distal end of the catheter, sometimes this connection is secured by twisting a locking collar over the luer connection (provided on the extension set). The other end of the extension tubing can then be accessed by a syringe or more commonly, connected up to a primary giving set or syringe drive for the administration of fluids and medication. Tube extensions with narrow bores are used for pediatrics and neonates because often a lower volume/flow rate is required for smaller patients.
When to Use IV Extension Sets
Extension IV Sets are devices that connect to IV catheters providing a longer distance between the patient and fluid being administered. This is a good equipment to use to avoid crowding areas. Theyre also used to keep and maintain the opening of the needle when the peripheral cannula is temporarily not in use and when a peripheral cannula is used for a long period of time, with intermittent medication, an IV extension set is attached to prevent micromovements of the cannula allowing for prolonged use.
Benefits of IV Extension Sets
IV Extension sets are a small and short tube that connects to an existing line that are easily managed when handling intermittent IV medications. IV Extension Sets are also great to promote safety for hospital staff and patients alike reducing the risk of needlesticks. Durability and line safety improvement. Enhances medical staff safety preventing blood and body fluid exposure when changing IV tubing. IV Extensions have a clamp that prevent backflow of blood.
A collection of noninvasive devices intended to conduct fluids from an intravenous (IV) administration bag/bottle to a peripheral venous cannula (not included) during gravitational or pump administration to a patient's venous system; some types may in addition be intended for enteral feeding applications. It typically includes tubing, connectors, chambers, and clamps; the bag/bottle may be included. It neither includes devices intended for invasive use nor a heat exchanger. This is a single-use device. (GMDN)
