Description

The T11X12 is a sterile, single-use device consisting of a stainless steel rod and a removable plastic sheath. Its primary clinical function is to "tunnel" through subcutaneous tissue—often across a long distance or through dense tissue—to allow a catheter to be placed away from the primary surgical incision.

This model is significantly thicker (11 G) and longer (12 in) than the standard tunnelers like the T17X5, making it suitable for major abdominal, thoracic, or truncal surgeries.

Key Features

  • Extended Reach: The 12-inch length is designed for "long-tunneling" where the catheter needs to be anchored far from the surgical site to prevent infection or dislodgment.

  • 11-Gauge Strength: The larger diameter provides increased rigidity, allowing the surgeon to navigate through tougher tissue layers (like fascia) without the rod bending or deviating from the intended path.

  • T-Peel Sheath: Once the tunnel is established and the steel tunneler is withdrawn, the plastic sheath remains. The clinician threads the catheter through this sheath, which then "peels" away symmetrically, ensuring the catheter stays perfectly in place.

  • Ergonomic Winged Handle: Includes removable wings or a customized grip to provide the surgeon with better leverage and torque during the tunneling process.

Clinical Use Case

Because of its size and gauge, the T11X12 is typically reserved for major procedures such as:

  • Complex Abdominal Surgery: (e.g., open laparotomies or "tummy tucks" where long-field blocks are required).

  • Thoracic Procedures: Where catheters need to be placed along the rib cage.

  • Large Muscle Flap Surgeries: For reconstructive procedures where the catheter exit site must be significantly distant from the flap.
