Description
The Avanos 61445 (formerly Halyard/Kimberly-Clark) is an Extra-Long 15-Gauge Paracentesis Caldwell Cannula. This device is the largest and longest standalone cannula in the Caldwell line, specifically engineered for rapid, high-volume drainage of abdominal fluid (ascites) in patients with significant subcutaneous tissue.
Key Features
Extra-Long Reach (4.75 inches): At 120.65 mm, this cannula is designed for patients with a large body habitus (high BMI) where standard 3.25-inch needles cannot safely reach the peritoneal cavity.
Large-Bore 15-Gauge Diameter: The 15G lumen provides the highest flow rate available in the Caldwell series. This is critical for quickly draining large volumes of fluid (LVP) or handling viscous ascitic fluid that might clog thinner needles.
Blunt-Tipped Safety Needle: The internal needle features a blunt tip designed to be "atraumatic." This safety feature helps prevent the accidental puncture of the bowel or other abdominal organs as the device is advanced through the abdominal wall.
Offset Side-Hole Design: The cannula is equipped with four offset side-holes near the distal tip. This prevents the "omental plug" effect—where abdominal tissue is sucked against the tip—ensuring steady, uninterrupted fluid flow.
Clear Proximal Hub: Features a transparent hub that allows for the immediate visualization of fluid "flashback," confirming successful entry into the fluid pocket.
Technical Specifications

Needle Gauge: 15 G
Needle Length: 4.75 inches (120.65 mm)
Tip Style: Blunt-Tipped
Material: Stainless Steel

Primary Uses
High-Volume Therapeutic Paracentesis: Used to remove several liters of fluid in obese patients with symptomatic ascites, typically due to liver cirrhosis or heart failure.
Rapid Drainage: The combination of the 15G bore and the multi-port tip significantly reduces procedure time compared to standard needles.
Management of Exudative Fluid: The large bore is ideal for fluid with high protein or fibrin content that requires a wider path to prevent occlusion.
