The Avanos 61444 (formerly Halyard/Kimberly-Clark) is an Extra-Long 15-Gauge Caldwell Paracentesis Cannula. This is the most robust and longest version of the Caldwell cannula series, combining a large-bore diameter with an extended reach for the most challenging paracentesis procedures.

Maximum Flow Rate (15-Gauge): The 15G diameter is the largest bore available in the Caldwell line. It is designed for high-speed drainage of abdominal fluid (ascites) and is particularly effective when the fluid is viscous or contains debris that would clog thinner 18G needles.
Extended 4.75" Length: At 120.65 mm, this cannula is designed for patients with a high body mass index (BMI) or significant subcutaneous fat. It ensures the clinician can safely and effectively reach the peritoneal cavity when standard 3.25-inch needles are too short.
Blunt-Tipped Safety: The internal needle has a blunt tip to minimize the risk of accidental organ or vessel perforation. This "atraumatic" design is a key safety feature for blind or ultrasound-guided entries.

Primary Uses
Therapeutic Large Volume Paracentesis (LVP): Used for the rapid removal of large quantities of ascitic fluid (often 5L or more) in patients with cirrhosis, malignancy, or heart failure who also have a large body habitus.
Drainage of Viscous Ascites: The 15G bore is the preferred choice for exudative fluid or fluid with high protein/fibrin content that requires a wider lumen to prevent occlusion.
Symptomatic Relief: Provides immediate relief from abdominal distension, pain, and difficulty breathing caused by high-pressure ascites.
