Description

The Avanos HN2-40 is a PROBLOC II Insulated Regional Block Needle*. It is a specialized tool used by anesthesiologists for "single-shot" peripheral nerve blocks, designed to provide localized anesthesia or pain relief before or after surgery.

This needle is specifically engineered for use with a nerve stimulator to precisely locate the target nerve while minimizing the risk of nerve injury.

Technical Specifications

The part number HN2-40 provides the following technical details:

  • Needle Gauge: 22G (a standard, relatively thin gauge for patient comfort).

  • Needle Length: 40 mm (approximately 1.6 inches), intended for reaching superficial or medium-depth nerves.

  • Needle Tip: 30° Block Bevel (a "short" or "blunted" bevel designed to provide clear tactile feedback as the needle passes through tissue layers like fascia).

  • Insulation: Sleeve-coated insulation, which ensures the electrical current is only active at the very tip of the needle.

Key Features

  • Insulated Shaft: The specialized coating ensures that electrical stimulation occurs only at the tip. This allows the physician to pinpoint a nerve's location by observing a specific muscle twitch response from the patient.

  • Integrated Injection Set: Typically features a pre-attached clear tubing set. This allows an assistant to inject the anesthetic while the physician keeps both hands on the needle and ultrasound probe (if used).

  • Non-Cable Configuration: Unlike the HN3S series, the HN2 series does not come with a pre-attached stimulating cable. Instead, it is designed to be connected to a stimulator using a separate, reusable lead set (like the NSL-5).

  • Graduated Depth Markings: The needle shaft is marked with numerical depth indicators to help the clinician monitor exactly how deep the needle has been inserted.

  • Latex-Free: Safe for use on patients with natural rubber latex allergies.

Primary Uses

The 40 mm length makes this needle ideal for superficial nerve blocks where the target is not deep within the muscle, such as:

  • Interscalene or Supraclavicular Blocks: For surgery on the shoulder or upper arm.

  • Axillary Nerve Blocks: For procedures involving the forearm or hand.

  • Femoral Nerve Blocks: Often used for pain management in knee surgeries or hip fractures.

  • Ankle Blocks: For localized surgery on the foot or toes.
