Description
The Avanos PL18100TGC is a ProLong Continuous Nerve Block Set*. This set is a hybrid of high-visibility needle technology and a durable catheter system, specifically designed for deeper nerve blocks that require both ultrasound guidance and electrical stimulation.
The "TGC" designation indicates that the needle features a Tuohy Bevel, is Insulated (Stimulating), and is Echogenic.
Technical Specifications
Needle Gauge: 18G.
Needle Length: 100 mm (approximately 4 inches).
Needle Tip: Tuohy Bevel (curved tip designed to steer the catheter).
Catheter Size: 21G (designed to pass through the 18G needle).
Catheter Length: 36 inches (approximately 91 cm).
Guidance Type: Dual Guidance (Stimulating + Echogenic/Ultrasound).
Key Features
Tuohy Bevel Advantage: The curved tip is a standard for continuous blocks because it allows the clinician to direct the catheter at an angle parallel to the nerve, significantly reducing the risk of kinking or the catheter moving out of position.
Dual Guidance Technology: The needle is both echogenic (for clear visualization under ultrasound) and stimulating (featuring an integrated cable to trigger muscle twitches). This approach ensures maximum accuracy in complex anatomy.
Deep Access Stability: At 100 mm, the 18-gauge needle provides high column strength, which is necessary to prevent the needle from bending as it is advanced through several inches of tissue.
ProLong Catheter Durability:* The included 21G catheter is designed to be kink-resistant and robust enough for multi-day infusions when connected to an ON-Q Pain Relief System*.
360° Echogenicity: The needle shaft is laser-etched to reflect ultrasound waves back to the probe from any angle, which is critical for maintaining a "line of sight" at the steep angles required for 4-inch deep blocks.
Primary Uses
The PL18100TGC is used for Deep Continuous Peripheral Nerve Blocks (CPNB) where catheter steering and high-precision placement are required:
Deep Sciatic Blocks: (Gluteal approach) for continuous post-operative pain relief.
Lumbar Plexus Blocks: To provide long-term analgesia for hip or femur surgeries.
Infraclavicular Blocks: In patients with a larger body habitus where a Tuohy tip is preferred for better catheter placement.
Psoas Compartment Blocks: Requiring a stimulating Tuohy needle to reach nerves deep within the posterior abdominal wall.
