Description
This is a new Pediatric Near Contrast Test Booklet with a range of contrast sensitivity levels: full contrast (100%), 25, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 percent using Michelson measures. One side of each page provides Lea Symbols for testing of 3 to 5 year olds. The other side shows LEA Numbers for testing 5 to 8 year olds. Near Contrast testing provides an efficient means to detect or track ocular pathologies, including glaucoma, ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and keratoconus. Low contrast acuity loss measurement can used to demonstrate progress in disease treatment and help children’s parents understand the need for continued support. We have included the 1.25% level as recent studies on optic nerve tumors found that the average contrast sensitivity for kids without tumors was just better than 1%, whereas the contrast threshold for kids with tumors was 2.8%. These results are somewhat preliminary but inclusion of this
lower level is advisable. The use of the clinically tested LEA Symbols and LEA Numbers insures testing with a narrow acuity threshold for acuity level and pediatric age group.
This new Pediatric test is comparable to the adult Holladay Functional Acuity Contrast Test (F.A.C.T.), which is currently unavailable. It is also complementary with our Adult Near Contrast Test. This Pediatric test is used at near (16 inches or 40 cm) which makes it much more likely to hold the attention of young patients. Administration is quicker than repositioning a patient to use a distance contrast test such as the (adult only) Pelli-Robson. Since both full contrast and other contrast levels are presented under the same conditions, the illumination is identical. This permits accurate comparison of the results at the various contrast levels.
LEA Symbols and LEA Numbers at full contrast are presented 20/400 to 20/10 in 17 increments. The other contrast levels are presented in 15 levels 20/400 to 20/16. The ‘slip-over template’ can be used to block the acuity measures thus simplifying what the child sees. Optotype sizes are listed in Snellen feet and meters, LogMAR, decimal and letter size for each line. The template helps focus the child’s attention on the test lines at hand. Score card, recording form, answer key and comprehensive instructions are also provided to support plotting of a graph with the child’s results indicating the relationship of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Normal ratios are also indicated to permit comparison. The booklet is printed on high-quality styrene plastic for long term durability.
