Description
Key Features:
Isotonic Solution: Contains 0.9 grams of sodium chloride per 100 mL, making it isotonic with human blood (meaning it has a similar concentration of solutes). This results in an osmolarity of approximately 308 mOsmol/L.
Electrolyte Composition: Each 100 mL contains 900 mg of sodium chloride, providing 154 mEq of sodium (Na+) and 154 mEq of chloride (Cl−) per 1000 mL.
pH Range: The pH typically ranges from 4.5 to 7.0, with a common pH of 5.6 for 250 mL and larger containers.
Sterile and Nonpyrogenic: Ensures the solution is free from microorganisms and fever-producing substances.
Flexible Plastic Container (Freeflex® bag): Packaged in a specially formulated, non-plasticized film containing polypropylene and thermoplastic elastomers. This design is robust, minimizes leachables, and allows for administration without the entry of external air.
Single-Dose Injection: Intended for single use; any unused portion should be discarded.
No Bacteriostat or Antimicrobial Agent: Does not contain preservatives.
Uses:
Fluid and Electrolyte Replenishment: Primarily indicated for parenteral replenishment of fluid and sodium chloride when required by the patient's clinical condition. This is crucial for managing dehydration and maintaining extracellular fluid volume.
Treatment of Metabolic Alkalosis: Can be used in cases of metabolic alkalosis, especially when accompanied by fluid loss.
Mild Sodium Depletion: Suitable for treating conditions involving mild depletion of sodium.
Vehicle for Medication Delivery: Widely used as a diluent or carrier solution for the intravenous administration of various injectable medications.
Wound Irrigation: Can be used as a sterile solution for irrigating wounds and tissues.
Catheter Flush: Employed to flush intravenous catheters to maintain patency and prevent blockages.
Hemodialysis Procedures: Often used as part of the hemodialysis process for priming circuits or other related applications.
Pre- and Post-Operative Hydration: Administered to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.
