Description

Carry out primary and selective isolation of Campylobacter species from fecal specimens with the Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Campy Blood Agar Blaser with 5% Sheep Blood and Antibiotics. Campy Blood Agar Blaser with 5% Sheep Blood and Antibiotics is a modification of Brucella Agar Base with Sheep blood and Antibiotics by Blaser. The additional antibiotic cephalothin was added to improve the inhibition of commensal microbial flora in fecal specimens1.

Campylobacter are Gram-negative, spirally shaped microaerophilic organisms which may be present in raw milk, untreated water, improperly handled food and undercooked meats, poultry and shellfish. Human consumption of these organisms can result in a range of clinical illnesses from transient asymptomatic colonization to severe dysentery. The symptoms of Campylobacter enteritis include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, fever, and headache and muscle pain.

Use Campy Blood Agar with 5% Sheep Blood, Antibiotics for primary and selective isolation of Campylobacter from fecal specimens.

Selective: the incorporation of cephalothin, amphotericin B, trimethoprim, vancomycin, and polymyxin B in the medium makes the medium inhibitory to Enterobacteriaceae, staphylococci, and yeast.

Ready to use: convenience of prepared media.

Casein and meat peptones in the medium provide nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur which are essential for the recovery of Campylobacter sp. Sodium is a source of essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Dextrose is an energy source and yeast extract supplies B vitamins. Sheep blood provides hemin and other necessary growth factors.
