Description
The Avanos 183A42 (formerly Halyard/Kimberly-Clark) is a Whitacre Style Spinal Needle. It is designed for spinal anesthesia, specifically for injecting medication into the subarachnoid space (the area surrounding the spinal cord).
The needle is a 22 Gauge x 3.5 inch (90 mm) pencil-point needle.
Key Features
Whitacre Pencil-Point Tip: Unlike traditional cutting-tip needles (like the Quincke), the Whitacre has a rounded, non-cutting "pencil-point" tip with a side-port opening. This design spreads the dural fibers rather than cutting them, which is clinically proven to significantly reduce the risk of Post-Dural Puncture Headaches (PDPH).
Precise Side-Port Orifice: The side opening is positioned approximately 2 mm from the tip, ensuring that the entire port is inside the subarachnoid space for uniform drug delivery before the tip reaches too deep into the spinal canal.
Detachable Wings: The needle includes removable wings that allow the clinician to customize their grip based on personal preference or the patient's anatomy, providing greater stability during insertion.
High-Contrast Hub: Features a translucent plastic hub for clear visualization of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) "flashback," confirming successful entry into the spinal canal.
Integrated Metal Stylet: A precisely fitted metal stylet prevents tissue coring and ensures the needle remains patent (open) as it passes through the ligaments and dura mater.
