Description
- Tetracaine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.5% (Somerset Therapeutics; NDC 70069-597-01)
- Tetracaine Hydrochloride 0.5% w/v (5 mg/mL, equivalent to 0.44% tetracaine base)
- Ester-type local anesthetic
- Clear, colorless, sterile liquid supplied in a 15 mL dropper bottle (Rx only)
- Formulated with chlorobutanol 0.4%, boric acid, potassium chloride, edetate disodium dihydrate, and water for injection (pH 3.7–6.0)
- Provides rapid surface anesthesia for brief ocular procedures such as tonometry, gonioscopy, foreign body removal, suture removal, and diagnostic scraping
- Rapid onset within 15–30 seconds, with anesthetic effect lasting approximately 15–20 minutes
- Administered as 1 drop topically into the target eye(s) prior to the procedure
- Stored at controlled room temperature between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F), protected from light, excessive heat, and freezing
- Topical ophthalmic surface use only; contraindicated for intraocular or intracameral injection
- Strictly for in-clinic administration; not intended for home patient use due to risk of severe corneal epithelial breakdown and ulceration
- Patients must avoid rubbing or touching the eye until full sensation returns to prevent accidental corneal abrasions
